Three letters written to the Reverend Shirley Baker discussing church matters and the treatment of Baker by the Missionary Committee in Sydney in 1879. Two letters (one dated 1 Dec. 1880) are by Jabez B. Watkin, president of the Free Church of Tonga, and one by Fred Langham, a Methodist missionary writing from Bau in Fiji (dated 14 June 1880).

Missionary and Premier of Tonga. Born in London, Baker arrived in Melbourne as a stowaway in 1852. In 1860 he was ordained as a Wesleyan minister and sent to Tonga, where he became chief adviser to King George Tupou, founder of the Tongan kingdom.
